Have You Raised an Ebenezer Lately?

by Ellen Jackson

This Sunday we will sing “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” The text was written by Robert Robinson in 1758, referring to 1 Samuel 7:12.

After a battle in which the Israelites defeated the Philistines, Samuel “took a stone and set it up . . and named it Ebenezer (Stone of Help); for he said, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’ ” Robert Robinson wrote, “Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come.”

Our journey with God isn’t finished. God has helped us to come this far. We trust, even in these times that are confusing and frustrating and sometimes sad, that God will complete the journey with us. May we all believe that as we sing on Sunday!
