About The Event
The United Methodist Church and its Native American community are on a journey of reconciliation and healing. In a highly publicized Act of Repentance at the 2012 General Conference, the church acknowledged that some of its past actions have inflicted physical harm and cultural violence on Native American populations. In his opening remarks, Robert E. Hayes, Jr. Bishop of the Oklahoma Conference and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference, called the Church to accountability and action.
“We are here to repent of the Methodist church’s role in cooperation with and entering into those relationships with political forces that resulted in the killing of men, women, and children…It is only when we acknowledge our manifold sins and wickedness in sincerity and truth will repentance find us. “
Rev. Dr. David Wilson is the Director of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference. He brings the study entitled, Who is My Neighbor?: A DVD will provide a historical context for the “Act of Repentance toward Healing Relationships with Indigenous People .
